Compatibility of Aluminum Foil Tape with SBS Membrane

Aluminum foil tape can indeed temporarily bond SBS waterproof membrane, but the material characteristics of both materials must be considered:

Aluminum Foil Tape Characteristics: The base material is calendered aluminum foil, and the adhesive is mostly acrylic or rubber-based. It has good weather resistance but limited ductility.

SBS Membrane Characteristics: Modified bitumen material has elasticity and must withstand temperature differences from -20℃ to 80℃ during construction.

Suitable Scenarios: Suitable for small-area repairs or auxiliary fixing of joints; not recommended as a primary bonding method.

Three Key Techniques for Construction

To achieve ideal results with aluminum foil tape on SBS membrane, remember these practical methods:

Surface Treatment: First, clean the surface of the roll material with alcohol to remove asphalt oil and dust.

Temperature control: Apply in an environment of 15-35℃. At low temperatures, a heat gun can be used to moderately heat the tape.

Pressure application: After application, roll firmly 3-5 times to enhance the molecular bond between the tape and the roll material.

Precautions for long-term use: If you plan to use aluminum foil tape to fix SBS roll material for a long time, these details should not be overlooked:

UV protection: When the aluminum foil surface is exposed, it is recommended to cover it with a protective layer to prevent adhesive aging.

Joint design: The overlap width should be no less than 5cm, and a fish-scale overlap is more secure.

Regular inspection: Before and after the rainy season, check if the edges of the tape are peeling off, and promptly reapply or replace it.
